Spectroscopy in Cosmology and Galaxy Evolution 2005-15

Motivation and format of workshop

We are witnessing a massive expansion in the worldwide capacity for spectroscopic observations. This is an opportunity for researchers in galaxy evolution and cosmology to conduct large spectroscopic surveys and obtain results with unprecedented fidelity going far beyond the local Universe.

At the same time, the worldwide imaging capacity increases and photometric redshifts surveys are being proposed at truely massive scales. Photometric redshift surveys need deep and high-redshift spectroscopy for training and specific spectroscopic surveys need a supply of high-quality photometric redshifts to ascertain high completeness and low contamination of their input samples.

In this workshop we wish to identify the most important scientific drivers of spectroscopic surveys in the near future. We want to look at ongoing surveys and those that are soon to commence, and converge on the best way to go with the next generation of spectroscopic surveys and their instrumentation.

In this context we wish to announce that the IAA in Granada is currently driving a feasibility study of an instrument proposed for the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias named SIDE (side.iaa.es). The aim is to develop a high-throughput 1000-fiber spectrograph suited to observe simultaneously from the optical to near-infrared.

We are trying to bring together current and future key players in this field as well as some active workers from imaging surveys. We will have short presentations by most participants, and in addition we aim for structured discussion sessions. In the end we hope to conclude which spectroscopic efforts would be most desirable for studying galaxy evolution and cosmology in the next decade.

The social programme includes a wine reception on the first evening - companions are welcome. The workshop will close with a dinner held in a traditional Andalusian Carmen near the Alhambra. If all the above sounds like inspiration, then register... Per Alhambra ad astra.

A registration fee of 120 Euro will have to be paid by cash at the registration desk. This fee includes welcome cocktail, coffee breaks, and conference dinner.

Sessions will take place at the lecture hall of Carmen de la Victoria, Cuesta del Chapiz, 9, Granada.

WiFi Internet access will be provided at the conference venue.
