SUMMARY:Scientific Presentation in Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:This course of our IAA SO Training programme will focus on how to impart scientific presentations. It will consist of a one hour lecture followed by up to four practical sessions every two weeks. \nThe participants have the opportunity to impart presentations that they have either given recently or that they are preparing for upcoming events. The SO Training team (coordinator and/or co-coordinators) as well as the audience will provide the speaker with feedback. Up to two presentations (not longer than 25 min) can be accommodated per session. The participation in the practical sessions is optional\, but all participants are strongly encouraged to impart a presentation in the practical sessions and also to attend those by others to learn and help with feedback. \nThe sessions will take place bi-weekly on Tuesday afternoon. SUMMARY:Academic Spanish Course for Foreigners (2024)
DESCRIPTION:The Academic Spanish course for foreigners is designed to facilitate effective communication in academic and professional contexts. Through a practical and personalized focus\, the participants will develop essential linguistic abilities to discuss scientific articles\, participate in conferences\, give presentations\, and collaborate in international projects. The program includes technical vocabulary\, beginner and advanced grammar\, and simulations of real-life situations. Moreover\, it will promote the cultural immersion to strengthen the comprehension of the Hispanic world\, and their impact on interdisciplinary investigation and collaboration. \nThe course is taught by Prof. Nazira Ruíz

SUMMARY:El festival Pint of Science organiza 18 charlas de divulgación científica en los bares de Granada
DESCRIPTION:Esta mañana se ha presentado en el Parque de las Ciencias el festival internacional de divulgación científica Pint of Science\, que se celebra los días 13\, 14 y 15 de mayo en Granada. Durante estas tres jornadas\, investigadores e investigadoras de la ciudad sacarán la ciencia de los laboratorios y compartirán su conocimiento con la ciudadanía en los bares. En esta sexta edición\, las charlas se han organizado en torno a tres temáticas con la participación de científicos de distintos centros de la Universidad de Granada como el Instituto de Inteligencia Artificial (DasCI-UGR) o el Centro de Investigación Mente\, Cerebro y Comportamiento (CIMCYC-UGR)\, y del Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC). «De los átomos a las galaxias»\, propone un viaje que va desde las partículas subatómicas hasta los agujeros negros; «Tech me out» se atreve a abordar las innovaciones tecnológicas y las implicaciones del desarrollo de la Inteligencia Artificial; y «Nuestra sociedad» recoge diversas investigaciones relacionadas con nuestro día a día\, como la Nutrición\, la Democracia o el Sexo. \n“En Granada\, este año celebramos la sexta edición pasando de dos a tres bares. A las sedes de Lemon Rock y La Tertulia\, que repiten participación\, se suma este año la de la Sala Premier. Es un evento que siempre tiene una gran acogida en la ciudad y el equipo organizador local ha apostado por seguir ampliando la oferta de charlas”\, explica Antonio Gómez\, coordinador local de Pint of Science Granada. Por su parte\, el coordinador nacional\, Carlos Peris\, señala que “en todo el mundo\, 560.000 personas han asistido de público durante toda la vida del festival. En España\, 93.500 asistentes han disfrutado de las charlas de divulgación científica en alguno de los 325 bares que han organizado eventos”. Peris ha agradecido a las 400 personas voluntarias en España que organizan los festivales locales\, con el objetivo de acercar la ciencia a la sociedad. \nRosana Montes\, investigadora de DasCI-UGR y ponente en Pint of Science 2024\, ha destacado la importancia de sacar la ciencia de los laboratorios “porque es importante que la sociedad entienda lo que hacemos\, y debemos adaptar el mensaje no solo para hablar de forma que nos entiendan sino también hablar dónde nos escuchen”. \nRueda de prensa del Pint of Science. Han intervenido Luis Alcalá (director Parque Ciencias)\, Carlos Peris (coordinador nacional del PoS)\, Antonio Gómez (coordinador local Pos) y Rosana Montes (investigadora y secretaria del instituto DaSCI)  \nPint of Science 2024 es un evento gratuito para todos los asistentes y en Granada es posible gracias al patrocinio del Parque de las Ciencias de Granada\, al mecenazgo de Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC)\, el Instituto de Inteligencia Artificial (DaSCI-UGR)\, el Vicerrectorado de Extensión Universitaria\, Patrimonio de la Universidad de Granada y Relaciones Institucionales\, y la colaboración de la Asociación Biotecnólogos de Andalucía (AsBAn). \nEquipo del Pint Of Science Granada  \nPint of Science a nivel nacional y mundial \nEspaña lidera la participación mundial en el festival Pint of Science\, con 850 charlas en los bares de 67 ciudades. Como novedad\, este año desde la organización nacional se ha reforzado y apoyado la importancia de la ciencia básica\, que ha hecho posible alcanzar hitos como las vacunas o los viajes espaciales. Del mismo modo\, se han puesto en valor temas de interés social actual como las políticas científicas y la transición energética\, que afectan directamente al bienestar\, economía y crecimiento del país. \nPint of Science nació en mayo de 2013 en Reino Unido cuando los investigadores Michael Mostkin y Praveen Paul organizaron un evento en sus laboratorios con el fin de mostrar la investigación que realizaban a personas afectadas por distintas enfermedades mentales. Ellos mismos comprobaron la gran repercusión que tuvo en esos pacientes\, y pensaron: “si la gente va a los laboratorios… ¿por qué no llevar la ciencia al lugar donde está la gente\, los bares?”. Poco se imaginaban que unos años después\, su idea daría la vuelta al mundo\, celebrándose este 2024 simultáneamente en los 5 continentes\, contando con 25 países participantes. \n¡Los días 13\, 14 y 15 de mayo se brinda en los bares por la ciencia y su divulgación! \nLa programación de Pint of Science en Granada está compuesta por las siguientes charlas: \n“Tech me Out”. SUMMARY:New possibilities for atmospheric analysis with Monte Carlo
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, significant advancements have been made in scientific computing utilizing the Monte Carlo method\, particularly at the intersection of two key communities: the heat transfer community and the computer graphics community. The first breakthrough is that the computation time required to solve radiative transfer becomes invariant\, whether the ground is described by a single building or thousands of them\, whether the 3D clouds are poorly resolved or refined. We recently published in the journal PNAS a climate-analysis-oriented application showing this computation time invariance\, extending to the spectral\, spatial\, and temporal domains. The second breakthrough of the paper lies in the nonlinear coupling of radiative transfer and gas spectroscopy\, allowing estimation of unbiased line-by-line radiative quantities\, even when considering scattering.
