SUMMARY:SO Colloquium – Atmospheric Dispersion Correction to detect Exo-Earths: EXOTICA\, ANDES\, and RISTRETTO
DESCRIPTION:Astronomical observations with ground-based telescopes are affected by wavelength-dependent atmospheric dispersion\, due to the variation of the refractive index of the atmosphere with wavelength. In high-resolution imagers and spectrographs\, as used in exoplanet searches\, the use of an atmospheric dispersion corrector (ADC) is mandatory. \nState-of-the art ADCs will thus be implemented in EXOTICA\, ANDES and RISTRETTO. EXOTICA\, the recently proposed EXOplanet Tracker Instrument at Calar Alto\, is a high-resolution spectrograph for radial velocity monitoring of exoplanet candidates. ANDES\, the ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph\, is the high-resolution optical and near-infrared spectrograph for the ESO Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). RISTRETTO is a visible high-resolution spectrograph fed by an extreme adaptive optics (XAO) system\, to be proposed as a visitor instrument on ESO VLT. \nThe atmospheric dispersion has a strong impact on acquired images even after ADC correction. Fiber-fed seeing-limited spectrographs\, like EXOTICA and ANDES\, have different ADC requirements than diffraction limited instruments\, like RISTRETTO\, that imposes requirements at the level of few milli-arcseconds. On the other hand\, for planet-hunting spectrographs like ESPRESSO\, the ADC were over-engineered to reduce systematics to the cm/s-level. SUMMARY:The Index Diagram as a Tool to Disentangle Host Galaxy Contributions in Quasar Spectra
DESCRIPTION:We revisit the Quasar Main Sequence (QMS) by investigating the impact of the stellar component from the host galaxy (HG) on the emission-line spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN). After identifying SDSS-DR19 spectra with broad emission lines\, we constructed the Index diagram\, a novel\, model-independent diagnostic based on redshift-corrected spectra\, designed to efficiently identify sources with significant stellar HG contributions and to classify AGN spectra into three categories: HG-dominated (HGD)\, intermediate (INT)\, and AGN-dominated (AGND) sources. \nOur QMS analysis shows that HGD sources predominantly occupy the Population B region\, typically exhibiting negligible Fe II emission\, while INT and AGND sources display similar distributions in the Population A region. Cross-matching with radio\, infrared\, and X-ray catalogues reveals that the strongest radio emitters are preferentially associated with HGD and INT sources\, whereas strong X-ray emitters are found among INT and AGND objects\, which also populate the AGN region in the WISE colour diagram. The applicability of the Index diagram is also demonstrated by its implementation in large spectroscopic datasets\, including SDSS DR20 and DESI\, enabling systematic studies of AGN-HG decomposition across big data samples. \nFecha y lugar: 09/06/2026 – 12:30 | Salón de ActosAlenka NegreteInstituto de Astronomía – UNAM \n  \n

SUMMARY:Taking Pictures and Making Movies of Supermassive Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:Black holes are cosmic objects so small and dense\, that nothing\, not even light can escape their gravitational pull. Until recently\, no one had ever seen what a black hole actually looked like. Einstein’s theories predict that a distant observer should see a ring of light encircling the black hole\, which forms when radiation emitted by infalling hot gas is lensed by the extreme gravity near the event horizon. \nThe Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a global array of radio dishes that has now successfully imaged the 6.5 billion solar mass black hole at the center of galaxy M87\, and the 4 million solar mass black hole at the center of the Milky Way – both exhibiting the predicted strong gravitational lensing. Subsequent observations have revealed ordered magnetic fields on horizon scales with implications on how black holes launch relativistic jets of material. What’s next? SUMMARY:En busca de nuevas Tierras
DESCRIPTION:El Museo de las Ciencias de Castilla-La Mancha en Cuenca acoge la exposición temporal ‘En busca de nuevas Tierras’\, una muestra dedicada a la misión espacial europea Plato y a uno de los grandes retos actuales de la astrofísica: la búsqueda y caracterización de planetas similares a la Tierra fuera del Sistema Solar. \nLa exposición\, que podrá visitarse hasta el 30 de agosto\, ha sido desarrollada por el IAA-CSIC con participación de FECYT y de todo el consorcio PLATO España\, además de nuestro instituto\, incluye el Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC)\, Centro de Astrobiología (CAB/INTA-CSIC)\, Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA)\, Universidad de Granada (UGR) y Universidad de Valencia (UV). \nA través de paneles divulgativos\, maquetas\, modelos tridimensionales y piezas reales de ingeniería\, la muestra explica de forma accesible qué es la misión PLATO\, cómo se detectan los exoplanetas y cuál es la contribución española a este proyecto de la Agencia Espacial Europea. \nLa muestra se organiza en quince paneles\, ocho de los cuales contextualizan la ciencia exoplanetaria\, los objetivos científicos de la misión y los métodos utilizados para la detección de planetas fuera del Sistema Solar. Estos incorporan códigos QR que permiten acceder a audiodescripciones y a una plataforma web con contenidos ampliados. \nLa propuesta se completa con modelos 3D de estrellas y planetas\, con maquetas de algunas componentes de la nave espacial\, y finalmente con vitrinas que albergan componentes tecnológicos desarrollados en centros españoles implicados en la misión\, lo que permite mostrar al público el trabajo de ingeniería que hace posible la obtención y el procesamiento de los datos científicos del satélite. \nEn la inauguración de la exposición participaron la coordinadora de Cultura de la Junta en Cuenca\, Yolanda Rozalén\, junto al director del Museo de las Ciencias de Castilla-La Mancha\, Javier Semprún; el astrónomo del Museo\, José María Sánchez; y representantes del ámbito científico vinculados a la misión PLATO. Durante el acto institucional intervinieron Juan Carlos Suárez (UGR); Andrés Moya (UV); y Ana Belén Balado (INTA). Además\, la jornada incluyó una conferencia con Juan Carlos Suárez\, Andreas Moya\, Gonzalo Ramos (INTA)y Rosario Sanz (IAA-CSIC) \nOs invitamos a acercaros al Museo de las Ciencias para disfrutar de esta exposición y conocer de cerca cómo la investigación científica trabaja para responder a una de las grandes preguntas de la humanidad: si existen otros planetas habitables más allá de la Tierra. \n

SUMMARY:Decoding the clockwork of repeating nuclear transients: unveiling black hole environments with optical polarimetry
DESCRIPTION:Repeating nuclear transients are quasi-periodic outbursts occurring in galactic nuclei\, driven by episodic accretion onto supermassive black holes (SMBHs). These events provide unique laboratories for advancing our understanding of accretion physics\, yet the innermost regions of most galactic nuclei remain inaccessible to direct imaging. More routinely observational approaches are therefore required to uncover the geometry and physical mechanisms governing these extreme environments. \nIn this talk\, I will present optical polarimetry as a powerful tool to probe the hidden structures surrounding SMBHs. I will show how polarimetric observations reveal the geometry of two different classes of repeating nuclear transients: ASASSN-14ko\, the most regularly repeating periodic nuclear transient known to date and a repeating partial tidal disruption event candidate\, and GSN069\, the prototype source of quasi-periodic eruptions. SUMMARY:Particle acceleration and non-thermal radiation in young star clusters
DESCRIPTION:Cosmic ray acceleration up to PeV energies has been suggested to take place in massive and young stellar clusters. The formation of a strong termination shock driven by the collective action of stellar winds in a compact cluster offers a promising location where efficient particle acceleration might take place. The subsequent hadronic collisions of these particles result into gamma-ray and neutrino production. \nWithin a scenario of particle acceleration at the cluster wind termination shock\, we compute the expected gamma-ray and neutrino signals from both observed star clusters from the Gaia satellite as well as from the overall Galactic cluster population\, evaluating detection prospects for both source and diffuse emissions from this source population by very-high-energy gamma-ray and neutrino instruments\, as CTA\, KM3NeT\, and IceCube. \nFecha y lugar: 18/06/2026 – 12:30 | Salón de ActosSilvia CelliSapienza University of Rome \n  \n

SUMMARY:TALES OF BLACK HOLES
DESCRIPTION:TALES OF BLACK HOLES\nINTERNATIONAL DOCTORAL SUMMER SCHOOL ON ADVANCED BLACK HOLE PHYSICS\n\nBlack holes are among the most fascinating objects in the universe. From cosmological\, galactic and stellar scales\, where black holes are integral pieces in the formation and evolution of different structures\, to microscopic scales\, where the study of the fabric of spacetime and black hole interiors are interrelated\, black holes are ubiquitous in all research areas in which gravity is a prominent actor. A proper understanding of many aspects of modern physics requires being familiar with the concept of black hole; conversely\, comprehending black holes in all their dimensions requires extensive knowledge in diverse branches of physics\, including geometry\, thermodynamics\, fluid dynamics\, quantum field theory and numerical analysis. \nThis summer school will offer PhD and MSc students the opportunity to gain a solid understanding of the theory\, phenomenology and observations of black holes and acquire a broad perspective of current research tendencies. Lectures covering each of these aspects will be delivered by three leading international experts. \nThe school will take place in the historical Carmen de la Victoria at the heart of the Albayzín\, the old Arab neighborhood of Granada\, where all participants will be hosted on a full board basis. SUMMARY:The Occultation Portal: A Distributed Platform for Stellar Occultations
DESCRIPTION:The Occultation Portal (OP) is a scientific infrastructure originally developed within the ERC Lucky Star collaboration to support the coordination\, archiving\, and analysis of stellar occultation campaigns. It now provides the wider community with coordinated access to predictions\, datasets\, and analysis tools\, and supports several international programmes\, including our efforts at IAA–CSIC on trans-Neptunian objects and irregular satellites\, for which occultations are essential to measure sizes\, shapes\, atmospheres\, and ring systems. \nThe Portal has recently been redesigned as a distributed system\, combining centralized campaign coordination and data curation with dedicated analysis capabilities for resource-intensive workflows such as astrometric alignment\, photometry\, light-curve extraction\, and limb fitting. This architecture is designed to scale to additional sites through secure data exchange and automated synchronisation between nodes. \nIn the era of Gaia astrometry\, DR3 and beyond\, and the forthcoming LSST/Rubin survey — both driving a rapid increase in predictable stellar occultations — the OP is becoming an increasingly important data hub for the community.
