By heating\, compressing\, and chemically enriching the ISM\, SNRs trace how different explosion environments shape galaxy evolution. However\, classical optical criteria\, particularly the [S II]/Hα ratio\, miss a significant fraction of low-excitation or evolved SNRs\, biasing current extragalactic SNR samples. \nTo mitigate these biases\, we develop new optical diagnostics based on two- and three-line emission ratios combined with a Support Vector Machine classifier. This method reliably separates SNRs from contaminating H II regions and recovers up to ~35% of remnants overlooked by traditional cuts\, enabling more complete SNR samples. \nWe apply these tools to MUSE IFU observations of nearby galaxies\, identifying previously unrecognized SNR populations and characterizing their physical properties and luminosity functions. Using complementary Chandra observations\, we also detect new X-ray SNRs and investigate links between their optical and X-ray emission. We find that remnants located in higher pre-shock densities tend to be more X-ray luminous\, and that optical SNRs with X-ray counterparts commonly show enhanced [O III] λ5007 emission\, consistent with faster shock velocities. \nFinally\, we present extended diagnostics that incorporate a broader set of emission lines and physical parameters\, enabling the robust identification and classification of emission-line nebulae\, including SNRs\, H II regions\, and planetary nebulae. The giant radio sources (GRSs)\, defined to be those with a projected linear size >700 kpc\, pose a number of interesting astrophysical questions and are also valuable probes of the intergalactic environment. We examine critically different scenarios for their formation and evolution including insights from our discovery of such large sources associated with narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies\, which are believed to harbour lower mass super-massive black holes. \nGiant radio sources are believed to be inclined at large angles to the line of sight\, unlike blazars whose jets are almost pointed at us. The bulk of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected at gamma rays are associated with blazars. However\, from a careful multi-wavelength study\, we have been able to identify a significant population of misaligned gamma-ray emitting AGN associated with radio galaxies\, tripling the previously known numbers. This includes a small population of GRSs\, most of which were previously unknown. We discuss the implications of these in our understanding of GRSs. \nOne of the most striking examples of episodic nuclear jet activity in AGN are the double-double radio galaxies with two or more pairs of distinct lobes on opposite sides of the nucleus. Episodic nuclear activity has been suggested to be one of the models for the formation of GRSs. We give a brief overview of episodic nuclear activity\, and critically examine this possibility for GRSs.
